Lead Ice Technician:
The Uxbridge and District Curling Club is looking for a full time Lead Ice Technician starting for the beginning of the 2025-26 season.
Ice Tech Scope of responsibility:
Our Ice Technician is responsible for everything required for curling on the ice. This encompasses the daily preparation of the ice for our league play, bonspiels, and any other events that require the ice for curling including:
- Installation of four sheets of curling ice in time for the start of league play each Fall
- Preparation sand base prior to start-up
- Ensure all on-ice equipment (Scraper, nipper, mops, brooms, pebbling equipment, etc.) are ready for the season
- Scheduling of maintenance and preparation of all Ice Shed equipment prior to plant start-up
- Coordination of ice installation, painting, advertising, installation of houses, hog lines, etc.
- Establishing and monitoring appropriate environmental conditions through the Ice Mistress system
- Daily opening of the club to the members and keeping the access to the building safe
- Maintenance of floor surfaces adjacent to the ice surface and maintain member amenities within the arena
- Do or coordinate a sweep, pebble and shave of ice surface prior to each draw
- Routine maintenance of the ice surface during the season including hack maintenance, ice surface repairs, flooding and burning of the ice surface as required
- Upkeep of the equipment throughout the season such as compressors, heaters, dehumidifier, scraper, nipper, etc.
- Coordinate with any outside service organizations who service ice/plant related equipment
- Coordination of replacement of supplies
- The semiannual replacement of the deionization tanks
- Maintain a maintenance logbook
- Establish and maintain logbook for rock maintenance
- Lead the training of Ice Technician Assistants
- Plant shut-down at end of season
- Successful candidate is expected to have formal education in ice maintenance
- (Minimum Training Ice tech level 1 and level 2)

About our club:
Our four-sheet club in the heart of Uxbridge, Ontario has been open for more than 60 years. We continue to upgrade our equipment including the installation of an "Ice Mistress" giving control to our Ice Tech to adjust the parameters of the facility to create excellent curling ice. We have significant compressor horsepower having 2 Mycom 30HP compressors in our external plant. The club has an Ice King battery powered scraper, pebble nipper, 4 heaters and a dehumidifier. Along with a regular schedule of texturing our stones, our Ice Tech has all the tools at hand to perform their role to a high level and create excellent ice for our members.
We have a very healthy club hosting league play with two draws every night of the week (three on Friday night), as well as day leagues on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. On Monday afternoons we host the public school and Thursday afternoons the high school. On weekends we typically host 1 - 2 bonspiels a month on Saturdays, youth programs on Sundays, along with other activities such as learn to curl programs. Periodic rentals also require ice preparation.
A large percentage of our 320+ membership volunteer many hours of their time to help the club be as successful as is it. Often, we have members helping with mopping and nipping the ice between draws in the night leagues, which our previous ice tech was very appreciative of. Our club volunteers also get involved with the painting of the houses and hog lines during startup, and with the texturing of the stones.
The club is managed by a Board of Directors and an Administration Committee. The Lead Ice Tech position reports to the Administration Committee through the Building and Ice Chairperson.
We have a great atmosphere within the club where it is expected that members and employees interact in a manner that maintains a healthy climate and for the betterment of the club and the sport overall.
